Dear Ankafé Community,
Drinking roasted barley began as a fun experience to share with our one-year-old son, Anka. However, most of what we could find and drink was instant barley coffee. Only on our trips to Peru to visit family could we find fresh cebada tostada (roasted barley) to enjoy.
On one of those visits, the idea and name of Ankafé came. Even at one and a half, his eyes were beaming when we shared the idea. He couldn’t stop shouting “ANKAFÉ” at the top of his lungs.
As a family that doesn’t drink coffee, we knew this drink could be an opportunity to help others feel included in different moments and places, starting with our sons. This allowed us to create something, do good, and make memories. Together as a family.
We returned home and tested different roasts, brew times, and proportions. Anka has been the driving force behind hand-grinding roasted barley, carefully watching the brewing, and sampling—with lots of milk and sugar, of course.
Anka means “black eagle” in Quechua (language from the Andes region of South America), representing our vision to uplift others and soar to new heights. This is why we donate at least 10% of all profits, as well as our own time and expertise, to community-based organizations supporting families in the region of Ancash.
Our work stands on the shoulders of the individuals and traditions that have shaped roasted barley beverages over centuries— in South America and Asia. Today, our barley is grown, roasted, and sold within Utah, making its carbon footprint smaller than that of any traditional coffee in the state.
As a family, we are striving to focus on the journey—one of creating, connecting, and becoming. And we are grateful to you for being a part of ours.
